Do you need air duct cleaning?
The air duct cleaning industry has seen a lot of growth in the past decade. Unfortunately, as is often the case when a market sees a sudden spike in demand, not every air duct cleaning company out there is doing honest work. Some air duct cleaning companies will try to make you feel (sometimes by outright lying) that your family’s health and safety hinge on the cleanliness of your air ducts. Many outlets, from the EPA to consumer reports, tell us this is simply not true.
It is true that things like mold can have a negative impact on respiratory health, but air duct cleaning is not a catch-all solution. In fact, if you have mold in your duct work (which is very rare in New Mexico) you probably have a much more serious problem you need to address before you worry about duct cleaning.
What about removing dust and allergens?
This is where air duct cleaning really shines. It is true that once particulates have accumulated in your ducts, they will mostly stay there. However, especially in a dry climate like ours, there will always be some contaminants deposited back into the air you breathe. The only way to stop this is with a good air duct cleaning.
Get your air duct cleaning done right
The problem with using a less-than-reputable duct cleaning company is two fold. First, if the correct techniques and equipment aren’t used, you may end up just stirring up the dust in your ducts, and actually lowering the air quality in your home. The other issue is that some of these fly-by-night duct cleaning companies are doing such a poor job, they can actually damage the seals in your duct work. When this happens, desert dust can infiltrate your system, leaving you worse off than you were before your cleaning.
