Is it a Smart Move After Cleaning my Grout to Seal It?

At ThoroClean we specialize in tile and grout care and repair. Because of this, we often are asked a lot of the same questions. Here’s one of those questions:

Should you seal grout after cleaning? Well yes, sort of. But that answer doesn’t really do the question justice. Allow us to explain why…

Why should you seal your grout after cleaning?

Factor Number One – To prevent staining.

Who doesn’t love how clean tile and grout looks? Whether the discoloration on your grout lines is on the surface, or deeply etched into the porous grout, it can ruin an otherwise clean tiled surface. Here at ThoroClean, we recommend professional grout cleaning every year or two depending on where your tile is located. And don’t worry, we won’t stop there! After thoroughly cleaning your grout lines, we apply a powerful grout sealant that penetrates deep into the grout lines to provide maximum protection. Grout is porous by nature, which means it easily absorbs water and any contaminants the water brings with it. These can settle into the grout lines and cause staining. By sealing your grout after cleaning, you are providing a microscopic barrier that will keep out these harmful substances.

Factor Number Two – Because it will be easier to clean!

Who has time for another cleaning hassle? Nobody, that’s who! Not only will your grout look cleaner for longer, but should you notice staining on your grout after we’ve cleaned and sealed it, it will be easy to wipe away. The sealer that we apply after cleaning creates a barrier that repels dirt and keeps contaminants from penetrating the grout lines. So if you do notice a little staining on your grout, it will be easy to clean with just a soft sponge or cloth and some pH balanced cleaner. Throw away your brushes and scouring pads you’ve been using to keep your grout looking acceptable. They won’t be needed anymore!

Factor Number 3 – It will prevent grout damage.

If you let your grout go without sealing it after cleaning, you’re asking for damage. Not only is unsealed grout vulnerable because it doesn’t have a protective barrier, but it is also difficult to keep clean. When grout gets too dirty and stains, we try harder to clean it. This usually involves using overly harsh chemicals as well as scrubbing too hard with scouring pads and bristled brushes. When your grout doesn’t have a protective sealant, this abrasion will cause the grout to break down over time and crumble. Once your grout starts crumbling, you now have weakened tiles that are susceptible to damage (especially on floors) and water penetration (which can be a costly repair in shower applications). Having your grout professionally cleaned and sealed every year or two will keep you from having damaged tile or grout.
